Andrew
Wicks is a Composer/Percussionist from Newcastle Australia.
Andrew moved to Newcastle in 2009 to begin studying percussion at the Newcastle
Conservatorium of Music under Percussionist Steve Morton. In this time Andrew was
involved in the performance of new and revisited works in multiple ensembles, with
highlights being the Australian premieres of works for wind orchestra by Johan De Meij and
principal percussionist for the Australian premiere of John Psatha’s marimba concerto
Djinn with Australian percussionist David Lockeridge.
Andrew has been associate principal percussionist with the Newcastle University.
Wind orchestra since 2009, a position he will continue to hold in 2012. Andrew has come
under the wing of mentorship with Australian percussionist David Lockeridge since 2010, with
Andrew being involved in his first tour with David’s concert Metal Wood and Skin throughout NSW.
Andrew completed his Bachelor of Music in 2011 with excellent results. He will continue to tour with
David Lockeridge throughout 2012 performing Fabien Theory by Nigel Westlake, as well as
composing works for David Lockeridge’s 2012 concert series.
Andrew originally grew up on the central coast and was strongly involved with percussion ensembles in Gorokan. During his time at Gorokan High School, Andrew had leading roles of the percussion Ensemble 'Rim Fire' performing popular percussion works alongside Director Jason Foy and Aaron Trew, also head percussionist for Gorokan High Band under guidance of Conductor John Hibbard. The orchestra and percussion ensemble toured the Australian Outback during early 2004 visiting small Aboriginal communities and Towns. Andrews’s career is only begging with a high interest in composing for percussion and multiple Medias such as film. Andrew explores new and interesting music ideas in his composing styles, something that also is unique in his performance ideas. Andrew is a highly energetic composer who will slowly start to make his impact on the Australian Music Scene.
